Sheep and goats
Our Small Ruminant Unit provides an ideal environment for research into sheep and goat management, animal welfare, and sustainable farming practices.
Whether you are working on genetics, nutrition, disease control, or behaviour studies, our facilities are designed to support a wide range of research needs.
Sheep research
Livestock
Our flock includes 160 sheep, comprising ewes, wethers and 9 specialised rams—including 3 Merinos, 2 White Suffolks, and 4 Powerbred 4×B sires—providing a genetically diverse population for research in breeding, genetics, and animal health.
The inclusion of trained rams for semen collection further enhances the unit’s suitability for genetic and reproductive studies.
Research opportunities
Use our well-equipped shearing shed, combi clamp and drafting race to conduct studies on wool quality, parasite resistance and productivity.
Our irrigated paddocks and extensive pasture management allow for grazing studies, forage testing and sustainable farming practices.
Animal welfare and management
Our team is trained in low-stress stock handling (LSS) and ensures regular animal welfare checks, making it easier for you to focus on your research while maintaining high ethical standards.
You can also study parasite management with drench-resistant barbers pole worm, all while benefiting from our on-site support staff and vehicle access for research logistics.
Goat research
Livestock
Our 54 Boer goats, including 31 breeding does and 23 replacement does, offer a diverse and flexible population for research into goat breeding, nutrition and health.
Research opportunities
With electric mesh fencing and powered goat yards, you can experiment with different breeding systems, feed types and management practices in controlled environments.
The shared teaching space and combi clamp provide ideal setups for research into handling and behaviour.
Additional features
Research into advanced feeding systems is supported by our Advantage creep feeder and nutritional monitoring, while permanent shade shelters ensure animal welfare is maintained in all studies.
