2020 Distinguished Past Student Winner 

Daniel Matthew Kelly AM graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Hons) (Rural Technology) at Gatton College (now The University of Queensland’s Gatton campus) in 1974.

After completing his studies, Daniel went on to become Manager, Palahra Farming Pty Ltd, Grantham before being appointed Manager (Agricultural & Livestock Extension), ACROSS, Tonj, Bahr el Ghazal Region, Southern Sudan in 1983. This was the first of many overseas appointments in the 1980s that included:

  • Manager (Refugee Resettlement Program), ACROSS, Maridi District, Western Equatoria Region, Sudan
  • Manager (Refugee Emergency Relief Program), ACROSS, Nyala, Southern Darfur Region, Sudan
  • Field Director (Northern Sudan), ACROSS, Khartoum, Sudan
  • Manager (Refugee Emergency Relief Program), ACROSS, Nyala, Southern Darfur Region, Sudan
  • Field Director (Northern Sudan), ACROSS, Khartoum, Sudan.

In the 1990s, Daniel undertook studies for a Master of Professional Studies (International Agriculture & Rural Development), from Cornell University, in the United States, which he completed in 1995.

Since December 2017, Daniel has been contracted as mentor to World Vision International, providing advice and mentoring in humanitarian operations and leadership for World Vision International Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Staff, as required.

Amongst Daniel’s many skills is the ability to have a conversation in Arabic.

In 2019, Daniel was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), awarded for his significant service to international humanitarian emergency response organisations.
