The UQ Dairy is a working commercial dairy integrated into UQ Gatton’s research and teaching ecosystem.
A joint initiative of UQ and the Queensland Government Department of Primary Industries (DPI), it provides students, researchers and collaborators with hands-on access to:
- collaborative research trials with DPI and other partners
- undergraduate and postgraduate training, including student-led projects
- demonstration of innovative technologies for industry audiences
- ongoing herd and environmental monitoring to generate meaningful, long-term data.
Our mission
Utilising collective strength, UQ and DPI can deliver excellence in research, education and engagement in subtropical dairy and related systems with industry and communities to unlock the potential of the Queensland dairy industry.
Collaborative partners include Dairy Australia, Subtropical Dairy Committee, East Aus Milk and Norco. Our teaching partners are the UQ Schools of Agriculture and Food Sustainability and Veterinary Science.
Our research
We are Queensland’s leading pasture-based dairy research facility.
The Dairy Unit offers a dynamic environment for collaboration between researchers, industry and government to solve real-world challenges in dairy production in a range of areas.
- Feed innovation and nutrition – Our research investigates optimised feeding strategies, alternative forages and nutrient formulations to improve productivity, animal health and the efficiency of pasture-based dairy systems.
- Animal health and welfare – We focus on ensuring the wellbeing of dairy cows through low-stress handling techniques, monitoring systems and research on disease prevention and treatment.
- Reproductive technologies – Our facilities support studies on artificial insemination, genetic breeding and reproductive cycles, providing researchers with the tools to advance knowledge in dairy cattle reproduction.
- Stock handling and behaviour – With advanced stock handling infrastructure and animal monitoring systems, we enable researchers to collect precise data on dairy cow behaviour, grazing patterns and health.
- Sustainable dairy farming – We explore ways to improve the sustainability of dairy farming, including research on feed management, water use and the environmental impacts of dairy production.
- C4 Milk – Through the C4 Milk project, we’re supporting northern Australian dairy farmers to adopt cost-effective, forage-based feeding systems that improve milk production, feed efficiency and farm profitability—focusing on forage quality, diet composition and practical system design.
Dairy operations
Our Dairy Unit is managed by a dedicated and experienced team committed to advancing dairy research and supporting student learning.
With a strong focus on safety, biosecurity and inclusion, the team fosters a collaborative environment where industry, researchers and students can thrive.
